[Letterhead: HEADQUARTERS SIXTH NAVAL DISTRICT FORT SUMTER HOTEL CHARLESTON, S. C.]

DISTRICT CHAPLAIN'S OFFICE NAVY YARD, S. C.

14 April 1945

Mrs. Eva E. Moorefield 706 Forest Ave. High Point, N. C.

My dear Mrs. Moorefield:

The Commandant of the Sixth Naval District has just received a notice of the death of your brother, Jewell Hilliard Spears. This notice has been turned over to me for further action. As the District Chaplain, I assure you of our united concern and join in our sympathy to you and your family. When we send men out to a unit at home or abroad, it is with a prayer in our hearts that each one will contribute his part and return at the time appointed. But in the providence of God, some do not come back. Such a loss is always great.

From the Paymaster General, General Accounting Office, Claims Division, Navy Department, Washington, 25. D. C., you will receive, in due time, information regarding the presentation of all your claims, such as, Pay in Arrears, Insurance, Pension, Six Months Gratuity and Death Certificate. If after a reasonable time you do not hear, it will be in order for you to write to them and request this information.

May I again express for the Commandant of the Sixth Naval District, the Officers and Personnel of the Marine Corps, our sympathy to you in this your deep sorrow, and may the blessing of God rest upon you and keep you.

Sincerely yours, [signature] THOMAS B. THOMPSON CAPTAIN, CHC, USN DISTRICT CHAPLAIN
