My dear Leland

We left Dresden on Thursday Nov 4th having remained there three weeks lacking two days. I staid [sic] notwithstanding the bad weather for the sake of being near dear Clara, and did intend to remain one month for she had promised if I would do so she might by that time get the children in readiness with winter clothing settle them with Mrs Burcage while away with me and remain with me 'till you came, but Leland was not well the entire time sore throat hoarseness and a little malaise & fever, he was not out but four

That of Emperor William the Crown Prince Bismark [sic] Von Molktee [sic, Moltke] Russian Embassy & French. In Munich Mr White has quite a pretentious place on Goethe Street. Had I felt well here I would have called on them as they were very polite and even attentive to me at Hamburg. I was not equal to receiving attentions and thus far have not sent them my cards. Clara's children were all three sick with colds when I left, but she writes me they are well now and after I got to Paris if I should be sick and feel that I would like her with me, to telegraph and she will come - and in the letter received this morning she says she will come to me now if I want her very badly, but she feels she ought

[right page] four or five times while there, I gave him small doses of [jasmine?] and some homeopathic remedies for the hoarseness and sore throat and soon as I thought it safe to expose him to the cold car travel started and am on my way to Paris. He is now well again and I would leave here to day and go on but am waiting for an overcoat that I ordered made for Leland to be lined with fur. I hope to get away tomorrow and shall go to Neuremberg five hours ride from here rest at my lot then to Cologne seven hours ride, rest there over night then on to Brussels another five hours rest [ there over ?]

One can do it in 36 hours by taking the express train traveling day and night without stopping if the cars were as comfortable as we have on this U. P. & C. P. rail I would do it, but as it is I would not do it even if disposed too [sic to]. The three weeks at Dreseden we had not two days where the sun shone and these only for a few hours, and it has rained every day here. Yesterday Sunday it held up for a few hours so I took advantage and rode all around the city. It is a beautiful attractive place. One street the Linden fifty five feet wide, derives its name from the double avenue of lime and chestnut trees through the middle of the street. On each side magnificent palaces

to spend a little time with her children and I think it is asking to [sic] much so do not as my heart wishes me to do, say come for I do feel so utterly alone as I never before felt. This is a Russian Hotel filled with Russians not one servant that fully understands English, but Christin George and Leland talking German and French we got along, but I feel desirous to get over the long distance back to Paris, where I hope to meet some one whom I know. I shall settle down quietly let Leland go on with his studies till you arrive there. I have written Mr Hicks

to forward my head sack to [L'Hedett ?]& Kane So you need not trouble yourself about it. I wish I had it now. I have bought a fur lap rug for the cars. The cars are very cold. Only a pan of hot water under your feet. We could see our breath as we breathed in the air and out the day we came from Dresden here it was bitter cold. We snuggled together with everything warm we could put on and under heavy lap rugs. I have on hairy red woolen drawers & shirts - fur shoes - and still am cold. We go south when we leave here and shall have no more such cold weather. The rain is pouring down and if Leland's coat was done would leave here to day. I shall get no more letters till I reach Paris. I have had but two from you in four weeks. Mr Kane has forwarded all you have sent. I telegraphed him to keep

Leland joins in sending love -

Dear Leland

Thinking you may be possibly be detained and not got off as soon as you hoped I will write a few lines from here and direct again to the Windsor Hotel. I wrote you a few days ago from Amsterdam Holland. I stopped two days at Antwerpt [sic]. From there I telegraphed you. I left there day before yesterday. It is only one hour from there here. It is not agreeable

So you see at last I have learned how to travel comfortably. When we arrive at a station we have only these few small packages we can pick up put in a carriage and drive immediately to the Hotel and secure a room before any one else arrives. I always take one of the Hotels Baedeker guide book recommends and have as a general thing been pleased. This is a beautiful City. I went out for two hours yesterday in the rain taking Leland and going to the public picture gallery. Leland is quite an adept at picking out the gems. We returned at one oclock and went into the restaurant to get a little
