F. S. DOUTY Secretary and Treasurer

SAN FRANCISCO, CAL., June 9th 1898

Mrs Jane L. Stanford

San Francisco

Dear madam:--

Complying with your instructions I visited the Vina Ranch on May 4th, remaining until the 23rd, in which interval I examined the books for the period from June 21st 1893 to April 30-1898. Bearing in mind that you had expressed misgivings as to the condition in which I might find the books, I made my investigations as comprehensive as possible, inquiring most particularly into every department where a shortage might occur. I have now to report that the accounts are in every particular correct; and that the same careful methods of book-keeping are there observed as in your office in San Francisco - the check of the latter office upon the receipts and disbursements at Vina being so complete as to render a defalcation well-nigh imposssible.

Very respectfully yours

Walter C. Dart

My Dear Mrs Stanford:

I take pleasure in sending you by same Mail a copy of March "International Number" Godey. I do not know whether I gave you a March Number when I had the pleasure of meeting you & the Senator at the Windsor Hotel. I wish particularly to call your attention to page 341, the article of H.R.H. the Duchess of Teck and to underscored part of advertisement

in back of book Page 24. You will see that H.R.H.'s article initiates the series "Wealthy Women Work for Women"; other noteworthy articles in the same series are to appear during the year. My object in this series was to educate the masses in what women of means were doing for their less fortunate sisters - the consecration of wealth to the good of humanity.

Mrs Davison tells me that you are deeply interested in the work for Women in San Francisco. What you told me in relation to the Woman's department

of the Stanford University, interested me much. My experience with the Public is that they know very little and I think an article from your pen on the woman's place of University work, or your San Francisco work would be greatly enjoyed. I should esteem it a privilage [sic] to publish such an article. Will you not write one about the length of the Duchess of Teck's? Any

illustrations that you might furnish I shall have reproduced in the best manner. The force of your name would bring the article home with great vividness. Trusting to have a favorable reply, I am with regards from Mrs Davison & myself, to your husband
