Goette

My dear brother.

We are here now in a very pitiful condition. Last years harvest was a very poor one, and this year the prospects are even worse. We had no rain for months and everything is dried up on the fields. Our want is immense, especially in the northern part of our province Schensi. In [Pei-hoii-wei?] the poor and starving people are living on the most nauseous food, horse manure even being used in innumerable cases. You know out of your own experience, what we have to suffer in such circumstances, and therefore I request you, may I conjure you to start immediately and collect alms for mine and your starving Christians, and our dear little orphan children.

Your brother

IV. be moved to tears. I in community with these children and honorable O. Seeraifaero [sic] ask you to have pity on us and help us, as you have helped so many poor and destitute. We, the missionaries are willing to undergo every hardship, if we can only save souls, redeemed by the precious blood of our Lord. We do not ask anything for ourselves, because we do not need much; it is for Jesus Christ's dearly beloved, we implore your help and assistance. We are contented, if we get only the most necessary things for us, being able to live from 4(?) dollars a month. About me you can, if you think it necessary, inquire at St. Beniface's Church 123 G. G. Ave, or at Rev. Fath. Montgomery, Chancellor of this Archdiocese, or at Rev. Clementin Deyman O.S.F. Orphan Asylum at Watsonville. Cal. Hoping to hear from you, Tremain Honorable Lady Yours devout servant Fath. Athanasius Goette O.S.F. St. Joseph's Home. Park Hill Ave off Baker and Haight St. San Francisco. Cal. P. S. After closing my letter I received the enclosed letters from China; my heart is broken. I most humbly ask you, dearest Madam, to help my poor brothers and other Fathers, and help our poor Orphans and Christians from starvation. T. A.

but no one, who has not been in those regions knows, how great is the brutality and cruelty, where with heathen parents dispose of their offspring. Hundreds and thousands of innocent children are killed annually by poor and wicked parents. It has been allways a principal part of our missionary work to save these little ones and have them educated in our orphan asylums. At present about 20,000 are under our charge. Everyone can imagine how much money is required to care for all the wants of such a large number. Owing to hard times in the last two years the help from Europe and this country has been very little, and on account of this we could not save the number of children, we wanted to save. We have in every larger place good Christians, who look after the poor thrown away children, and we would appoint many more, if we had only the means to support them. I could give many details out of my own experience, but I am afraid you would get horror stricken hearing such cruelty, brutality and barbarism. Now, Honorable Lady, these little ones lift up their hands to You, imploring You to save them and care for them! They ask with tears in their eyes a shelter from You and a Christian education! They say with the Prophet Tiresias: We little ones beg bread, and is there no one, who will give it to us? If You could see these little children saved by christian charity, how they pray every morning and evening for their benefactors, who saved their life and made known to them Almighty God, you would
