Mr. Obenauer was drafted into the National Army in November 1917. He evidently demonstrated an aptitude for service in the fledgling US Army Air Service, which offered him an officer's commission in late summer, 1918. Obenauer spent the remainder of his time in service at various training fields in the US before his discharge in June 1919.
