Mr. Sering was well past draft age when the US became a belligerent in the Great War. Nevertheless, he left his job as a railroad switchman to enlist in the National Army. Initially assigned to the 32d Railway Engineer Regiment, he transferred to a Transportation Corps railway company and sailed with them to France from Hoboken on 30 June 1918 aboard the Italian ship Duca Degli Abruzzi. He left Marseille for the US aboard another Italian ship, Roma, on 28 June 1919 (the fifth anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand), and set foot in New York on 17 July 1919. He returned to his railroad employment, married two more times, but by 1940 resided at the US Veterans' Home in Center, Indiana.
