Mr. Sering was inducted in the fall of 1917 and trained as an infantryman at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. As a member of the 13th Overseas Replacement Company, he sailed from Hoboken on 11 June 1918 aboard the troopship Grampian. Upon arrival in France he was assigned to the 7th Infantry Regiment's Machine Gun Company, 3d Division, AEF, with whom he served for the remained of his military service. Present with the Division for the Second Battle of the Marne, Mr. Sering was one of the men who helped the 3d Division earn its nickname "Rock of the Marne." He earned five campaign clasps for his WWI Victory Medal, and returned to the US on 22 August 1919 aboard the former German passenger liner Kaiserin Auguste Victoria.
