Mr. Spradley was inducted with the first major group of National Army draftees following national registration for the draft in June 1917. He was assigned to the 84th Division at Camp Zachary Taylor, Kentucky, and ultimately served as the mess sergeant for Company A, 335th Infantry Regiment. He deployed with the division overseas, sailing from Quebec, Canada, aboard the Cunard liner RMS Saxonia on 4 September 1918. The 84th Division saw no combat, being employed as a training unit for other units until the Armistice. It was not needed for the occupation force, so was returned to the US from Brest. Mr. Spradley returned to the US aboard the former Matson Lines ship USS Wilhelmina, which had been converted from cargo to troopship functions in 1917.
