137 1938 July 20. To the Morlands. 31. Irene Ashton-Jones visits us there.

August 1. Went to St. Bernard's Monastery in Charnwood forest - new church

7. Ros & Frank set out for Yorkshire in N.X. 15. R & F home from Holmebridge both with bad colds 0 (open car I suppose)

18. Dad starts limbago - v. bad. 22. Saw Mr Millington at agricultural office

24. Saw Mr Findley agri organiser re Frank's future. He did not want to return to Chatham house - he was so v tall among little boys

25 Rosalind & I set out for Norfolk. Visited King's Lyn, Hunstanton, Brancaster, Walsingham & Blakeney.

28. Home & found Bobbie in bed v bad back. 29 I started school

31. Rosalind sets out for Switzerland with her school

September 3. To Midland Agri college with Frank - no vacancy -saw the principal

4. Dr & Mrs Gill came to see Bobbie, pulse 60, poison in muscular tissue

27. I paid first fees for Frank at Midland Agri college. We are on the eve of war

29. Mr chamberlain met [Mons] Deladier, Mussolini & Hitler at Munich an agreement was arrived at. 30. Peace instead of war -wild excitement everywhere

October 1 Rosalind goes to the Royal Northern Hospital, London for Domestic Science All quiet in London. 5. Very busy getting Frank's things together

6. Harvest fest at N.K. Children decorate ready for Sunday

10 Gas masks fitted on children in school. All smiles and fun I decided to have German lessons - night class at Rugby next Wed

27/28. Cranford dress rehearsal * performance at Swinford - grt success

29. To Anderstey Creek. B & I selpt at Green View

November 3. Cranford At husbands Bosworth

8. Eclipse of the moon. V G view in N.K 11. F's half term

26. W.I fed annual meeting,Leicester. Address by Mr Findley on ? Flying doctor in Australia by Mrs Walker p.m

28. Mr Whiteman died. Frank goes back to college. Feast tea postponed

December 14. German exam. 29. Last German class Christmas at the The Morlands

January 9. Started school. 18. German class

1939 19 "Cranford" at Wigston Constitutional Hall for guide funds

24. Sunny day 25 Severe blizzard. Too bad to go to German

27. First aid practise in school. Mr Gubbins & friend came from ? to talk about gas. WAR

Feb 1939

1st. German at Rugby. 3. 1st Aid practise. 6. I have a bad head all day

No 1st Aid - No Gas - I fell on stairs. Dr Henry came

No German. 9. 1st Aid practise 6.45 good class men & women

13. Gas & 1st Aid. 15. German every Wednesday. 17 Parochial church council

19. Mother ill - puemonia again. Dr Mackintosh told us of a new cure for puemonia [M & B 693] tablets. Sulphanilmide.

23. 1st Aid practise - I began to show signs of a cold.

25/26. Stayed in bed - cold terrible chiefly in face -Sinisitus wired for Rosalind. 28/29. bad nights. Mother in bed at Morlands

March 6th. Father died at his desk in study. Sudden angina attack Frank came home

Mon 6th. Father buried in Syston cemetery - Full church - beautiful service Many old choir boys & men came & filled the choir stalls & sang beautiful music. Reg Green played the organ. A remarkable tribute to a remarkable man. Many friends came to The Morlands after to see mother who was in recovering from puenmonia. She was delighted to see them. Many she had known for 60 years. They came from far & near and were a real tonic for her. I was terribly upset at losing father. He always seemd so well & strong especially mentally. When the call came for him, he was sitting at his desk in his study, marking lists of new books with his thick blue pencil for the library just as he would have wished, could he has chosen.

Sun 19. We decided to take "Guthlaxton" at North Kilworth, a big house over looking the church, so that mother could come & live with us when she was better We continued in the village with 1st aid & gas instruction & all April 3 had a gas exam. 6. School began Easter holiday. Mother went to Anderby

7 We set about cleaning & decorating "Guthlaxton"

8. Bought curtains of green damask & folk weave for the big curtains, charming

9. Easter day. Italy captured Albania

10. Moved into Guthlaxton - slept there 1st time. 17. First Aid exam but doctor did not turn up

20. Mother, Lucy & Stella came. 21. Charlie & Reg came to discuss The Morlands

22. I had a day at Stratford-on-Avon as guest of Irene - delightful day

23. Flags decorated Stratford for St George & Shakespeare - We went to church with nosegays - talked to the vicar Noel Prentice. Saw Kamisarjerski's production of the Comedy of Errors

25. A.R.P exam at Lutterworth. Gas passed 28. 1st Aid exam at N.K

29 To The Morlands. I pruned the roses. 30. We fetched mother fromPeterboro'

139 May 1939

24. Empire Day - Pageant at school tea & games in Colonel & Mrs Belgrave's garden.

26 Break up Whitsuntide. Sun 28. Went to Syston, Midland Agri College Holmebridge. 29. Over the moors to Buxton. 30. Home.

June 1. Frank home. 2. Went to London - met Rosalind, to Hampton Court & Royal Tournament, Olympia. 5. Frank back to college.

6. Nat. Sav. annual meeting at Lutterworth. 7. Fete council meeting. 9 P.C.C. Mother is installed with us at Guthlaxton. Charlie & Reg have arranged for The Morlands & contents to be sold.

26. Sale day - Rotten - No buyer - things given away. No bid for the house itself. The sale of furniture & contents did not pay the expenses. War imiminent.

July 1. N.K. fete for church funds. Children gave drill display to music in Colonel's garden & court scenes from As You Like It, acted by drama class - great success

22. Heard Frank had been awarded scholarship - 2 years at the Midland Agricultural College.

August 4. Summer holiday. 7. To London - saw Rosalind. To theatre to see the "Housemaster".

8. Bobbie goes to the War Office to be medically examined. I go to The Tate Gallery & Westminster Abbey. Trip by the river to Greenwich.

9. Peterboro's to fetch mother. She has nettle rash. Called in Dr Henry violent rash. Doctor advises sea air, so we all go to Anderby creek. I rode with Frank in little Anna - v. jolly journey. He had not passed his driving test, but he held a licence. Mother rode with Bobbie. His hands & arms still bad with gas burns, 1st war. Rosalind begins her holiday & joins us. War news v bad in Europe.

August 24. 3.pm The Prime Minister, Mr Neville Chamberlain says "War is imminent". 28 Home to N.K.

31. Dr Henry visits mother

September 1st. Hitler starts war with Poland.

3. England must stand by Poland, so declares war on Germany. First aid post established in N.K rectory.

4. Bobbie takes Rosalind back to the The Royal Northern Domestic Science College - closed on account of war. Returned home to join A.T.S.

Do you remeber me. I helped 2 seperate weeks at Dover to wash pots. I am [not] enjoying Brian's research class at our Bramley [Training] centre.
