Nano Nagle writing to Miss Fitzsimons

ReadAboutContentsHelp
Letter sent from Bath, England, written while Nano is visiting her brothers there. She alludes to previous correspondence which detailed the foundation of her first schools in Cork, and how she withheld this from her family who until lately were uninformed of her work. While aware that her actions run contrary to Penal Laws, she is determined to continue. Nagle also writes that she has recently objected to a suggestion put forth by Mr. [Bryan Keating], merchant, South Mall, Cork, and Dr. [John] Butler, Bishop of Cork, to seek Protestant approval for the new Ursuline foundation in Cork; she leaves it to Miss [Eleanor] Fitzsimons to judge.

Dear Miss

tho’ I did my self the pleasure of writing to you lately, yet by a letter I receiv’d from our worthy friend, who acquaints me with the sudden death of his sister in law, she was a most amiable person and am most sincerely sorry for her: he says he resolv’d to leave Cork, ina bout 12 days if the ship be ready and the wind fair, I always admir’d his zeal and this is a great instance of it, to leave his afflict’d family and tender father, this shock revives all the trouble he had for the death of his eldest son for if anybody ever died of grief his daughter in law has: yet notwithstanding Mr M’s fortitude to leave his friends in this situation if his father who is old and sickly, shou’d fall ill it ownt be in his power to part as soon as he expect’d, nor can I imagine it possible he will let him goe, as he can hardly bear him out of his sight when he is in urgent affliction: as I heard you thought I come [here] for my health as you are so good as to interest your self [in my] regard, I was afread it might have mead you oneasy [?] assure you that, thank god I never was better and it was not to [?] the waters I come nor have I tasted them. I come to see my

brothers, and besure it was with much a doe I cou’d prevail on my self to pay this visit; I did not acquaint you with this tour as I weaver’d so much with my self, that I may say tell, I was in the ship I was not sure of coming, it was so much against my inclination to leave my children, and only to serve the foundation I shoud never have prevail’d on my self: our friend I have reason to think spoak with a prophetic spirit, by what has happen’d for my owne family wou’d never have the opinion they have at present, nor ever interest’d selves as the doe for its success, I believe you must be surpris’d when you hard the knew nothing of it, you hard what was true, the young lady that told you that my sister Nagle says was the first she heard of it and cou’d not believe it a tall she told her so, I fancy you dont forget I wrote to you when I begane my schools my own immediate family knew nothing of it, so the same method I was resolv’d to take, as I was sure they wou’d be the first to op pose me, never said wan word to them till, I saw things had such a prospect of succeeding, which I was sure I never cou’d have perswade them of if they did not see it, and it gives them all great pleasure that I shou’d be the means of promoting such a good work, and my sister in laws are as eager to get good subjects for us, as we cou’d be. I hope youlle approve of my maner of acting, as the less noise is mead about affairs of this kind, in this country, the better. Mr k.g got a letter from docter Butler, on which he came [to] speak to me about his sister, and says as we must be of such servise to the kingdom, if we had the protestants consent for the establishment he would be better plais’d she was amongst us, as she cou’d doe more good than any where else, on which I told [him] before my brother and sister, that had I consult’d my owne fa[mily] [I] should not have had a school in Corke, which they said was [?] they argu’d with him if such a proposal was mead, he [mor?] the foundation and the schools, I leave you to judge what [?] such a thing must be look on he come [unclear] of the scheme then, [?]
