State of Texas County of Walker; This contract made and entered into this day by and between Cunningham & Ellis [unclear] of the Texas State Penitentiary of the first part and J. W. Wynne, S.R. Smith, and J.M. Gary, composing the Board of Directors of the Texas State Penitentiary, parties of the second part: Witnesseth, that the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of Nine Thousand, Five Hundred and Seventy Eight and 86/100 dollars ($9,578 86/100) to be paid then as herein after specified, do hereby agree and bind themselves to furnish all labor and material required in the execution of all work as contained in the annexed specifications to the satisfaction of the Board of Directors of the Texas State Penitentiary. The said work to be commenced [unclear] before the first day of September AD 1880, and completed on or before the 1st day of January AD 1881. In consideration of the faithful perfor mance of the above agreement in compliance with specifications, the said parties of the first part shall be credited by the Comptroller on their account with the [unclear] as [unclear] of the Texas State Penitentiary, with the said sum of Nine Thousand five Hundred and Seventy Eight and 86/100 Dollars subject to appropriation already provided for the East Texas Penitentiary

Specifications for an addition of Four Hundred and Twenty feet of Brick Wall to be built on the South Side of the Penitentiary of Huntsville also for Three Hundred feet of [unclear] and grading all [unclear] following specifications and plan figured. Brick Wall, The old South Wall of main inner yard to be taken down, and the East and West Wall to extend South sixty feet each and connected with new South wall running East and West for a distance of Three Hundred feet with buttress corners all as per plan, height and dimensions all figured on plan. Excavate all trenches down to hard level clay bottom and build all foundation bruck worksmith sharp clean sand and cement mortar, three measures of sand to one of cement and continue wall above ground with lime and sound mortar. Make all proper rack bond connection with oldwall. Cap wall with three courses of brick projecting as per plan, all of [unclear] must be laid of good hard well burned brick Wall all slushed full of mortar and neatly painted on the on side and laid in a good workmanlike manner. feet to one hundre feed of center to outlets outside of wall grade, the [unclear] with ground to be nine square brick [unclear] built over[unclear] on inside of wall, to be two feet in the clear on inside and built to within 4 inches of grade and secured over top with 1/2 x 2 inch lattice iron bars riveted together with 3/8 inch iron rods and washers at each corner over center of each to be a cast iron prison hopper with flange at bottom, bolted to lattice grame, to be two sets of iron gratings marked in [unclear], one directly under main wall and one ten feet from the extreme [unclear] of [unclear]. Bars of grating to be 3 x 2 1/2 - Rods 7/8 in, set 4 inch centeres all built in brick wall. All brick must be good hard well burned brick laid in cement mortar, three measures of sand to one of cement. The bottom to be laid flatwise, bedded in cement and plastered over with cement mortar Plaster the inside sides and the outside of arch all complete, square the terminus of [unclear] with side supporting butresses.
