Eight sermons written by Townsend, who served as pastor of the Western Presbyterian Church in Palmyra, New York, between 1817-1820. Many of the sermons were first given by Townsend in Durham and Madison, New York before being given in Palmyra. Sermons were used through 1830. Sermon of 20 November 1814 given in Madison, New York dealt with the death of Judith Taylor, wife of Isaac Taylor. The original sermons are held at the Church History Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
