Mr. Julian Bond 823 Drummond South West Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mr. Bond,

I am very pleased to hear, through the agency of the Rev. Kim Driesback, that you would be willing to come to Gary for our April forum. We are prepared to leave the choice of dates to you, as between April 22 and April 29, since we know how busy you are, but we would like to have your decision as soon as possible, beacuse some of our other speakers are waiting for it. So far we have gotten Mr. Archie Hargraves, of Chicago, and Prof. Francis A. Cizon of Loyola U. (who lives around here and has made a study of Gary) to come on one of these two dates.

We are not quite certain of the form which our forum will take as yet, because it is an annual affair which has ben everything from a workshop to a forum (as it was when John Lewis was here in 1964), depending on whom we get to speak. Participation is usually pretty broad, from League of Women voters people to old, new and in between left types. This year our overall topic will be "The Urban Crisis and Human Rights." What we essentially want to talk about is how and if cities can continue with an inner black core surrounded by whites on the run. We hope, for example, to ask whether we should try for making the black cities the best possible, or if it is more important, or more or less feasible, to try for integration, or even if these are real alternatives. I think you can see the general trend. In a city with a 55% Negro population, such questions are very real and very hot.

I am anxiously waiting to hear from you as to which date you'd prefer and will, of course, let you know as soon as our plans are complete. If you are in town in February, as I hear you may be, we can perhaps spend a few minutes together.

Again let me say how pleased and excited we are, and how grateful, that you will be coming.

Sincerely,

Fred C. Stern Vice President

P. S. If you will write to me directly at 8300 Indian Boundary, Gary, Ind. 46403 it will speed things up. F. C. S.
