that is to say, myself, and two or three of the compa-
ny who remained with me, amongst whom I
remember, Ensign Bartleson, a very worthy young
man, and an excellent officer. It was one of
the happiest days of my life. The people were
all my friends, of which I had the most sa-
tisfactory [satisfactory] evidence at all times during my resi-
dence in the county. Every man, who went
out with me from Wayne County, returned
home in good health, and in good credit.
I found my dear wife & children in good
health. The next day, was County Court day where
I met with most of the people of the county
& had the pleasure of taking them by the hand
particularly the fathers & brothers of the young
men, who had been for the preceding 6 months
under my immediate care & command.
A few weeks after our return, the patriotic citi-
tizens of Wayne County, gave us a Barbacue at
Monticello. It was on a large scale. The citizens
of the county generally, were invited to attend
& I delivered an address to them, in which I
endeavored to do justice to the worthy men
who had served under me.
About the month of June 1813, as well as I recol-
lect, Genl. Harrison, Commander in
Chief of the North Western Army, made re-
quisition on Genl. Shelby for 5,000 mounted volunteers.
The General Assembly had at it session, the
winter before, adopted a Resolution, requesting
the Governor, in the event of there being a
call upon the state, for any considerable num-
ber of troops, to take command of them in per-
son. The Governor immediately after receiving the
requisition, issued his proclamation, calling
upon his fellow citizens to volunteer & avowing
his determination not withstanding his advanced
age (62) to command them in person. The call
was responded to, as might have been expected
from the chivalrous character of the Kentuckians
and of their noble old chief.
