May 17, 1922 – Wednesday
Lay awake again about two hours between 3 & 5; then,
the H's were stirring about awakened about a quarter
past six. Only one cabbage left in the store-room; also
have to get some stores. The H's, Misses B. & J. all went to
bazaar, so I filled the sugar bowl & butter dish, &
straightened around in the store room; then cut
all the withered flags; gathered the pink gladioli for
the tall vase & they look so pretty; made the sweeper
clean off the steps; emptied out waste baskets,
splashed the bathroom floor; got a paper for the
bottom of my basket & went for the strawberries,
but the woman was at bazaar, & the boy said they
had neither berries nor eggs. Mrs. Cummings & Mc-
Guire [McGuire] came to bring a leg of venison the farmer's boy
had shot – a much appreciated gift. After making
my bed, writing notes to Mr. Wiatt & Miss Campbell, I
finally started to town with my kodak; wet a num-
ber [number] of our miss. returning; stopped by the station
to reserve a place in the thru car to R for next Wed.;
not in with the other miss., but won't have to change
at Thaxi; met Mrs. McG. returning who invited me to
have a drink at the station dining-room, which I
did – of ginger ale, while she did most of the talking.
Then time to return for class, so got us farther. B. had
the store room swept out; we have 4 basketfuls of pro-
visions for other people. Right after break. I made a
cake; the H's were making fig jam, & later candy;
B. making out her bills for last bazaar; they came
to R4-5-3 & I could give exact change. Had to call
her to reheat the eggs as they had gone back on me.
She also floured the pans, which I had forgotten, &
put in the vanilla. I then made cho. sauce, & this
is to be our dessert tonight. When thru in the kitchen
we made out our menus; the boy is to make salad
dressing. He leaves tomorrow with Miss J. & R. We had

the venison for dinner & it was fine – the first time
I'd ever eaten deer.

May 18, 1922 – Thursday
I slept all night & didn't wake up till nearly seven o'-
clock [o'clock], so of course was late for breakfast. As soon as
class was over I went up to see if I could get any straw-
berries [strawberries], but the house was locked up & the [?] said
"the memsahib had gone in a motor car"; Returning
We all went to the train with C. & R., Mrs. S. & Miss P were in with them – shortly after we
got back we had breakfast, finishing up the re-
mains of the venison. A lot of the Cath. Priests went
down today; they filled 3 sections. We now have B's boy;
He has been at T's with Mary Cuthberts. I wrote to Dr. O. yes.
aft. to make an appointment while in R. Gave Mrs. H. some
yarn to darn her husband's socks. After break. worked
up 2 tins of butter & straightened up storeroom & meat
safe; B. had already given out dinner. Knitted some
on my sweater. We had slaw on our menu but the
boy boiled the cabbage. Drained this aft., but later I. & I
went to call on Mrs. Chapman, but she was not at home.
Had mangoes for dessert this eve. I was provoked because
she hadn't gone to Marshall's. Invited Mr. Ali Sou to din-
ner [dinner] this eve but he declined. The house mail came, but
very poor; an Easter card from Mr. Saussy, an I.J. a
Y.C. & a Lit. D. – no letters; don't know when this has
happened before. Mr. H. got me a R. worth of 1 anna stamps
at the p.o. The plums are ripening, but rot and fall be-
fore [before] coming to maturity. Want I. to crochet around the
necks of my sweaters – but have no needle. The bread
man didn't come this a.m., but we had plenty of brown
bread left from yes. – which was fortunate. The dhoby came
today again but didn't bring anything for me. C. bought
a leopard skin before leaving this a.m. – only R.10 –
but we were in class & didn't get to see it; I would like
one, or a tiger skin, or both very much. We were told,
that one of the latter had been heard near Cumming's
lately – I wonder if it is true. Had to wash rubbers again
