their bravery; but a B. puts cunning above most of
the virtues, so there again you can see some of
their traits worked out to their logical conclusion.

September 12, 1922 – Tuesday
I had to go to the I, II, III S. rooms today, get all
those piles of notebooks piece meal, & sign; it took
the whole day, & then I wasn't thru. Mr. G. is away
on one of his periodical trips to Lashio; this is prayer
meet. eve at the H's, also a class game of soccer on this
aft., so Mrs. E. & I have been asked to come early &
stay for dinner. Mrs. E. & Miss P. had both been to
Ma M's, so I stopped there this aft. – he won't last
long, which is a fortunate thing. It rained last
night, so I had to pick my way. The M.D. arrived
just before I left, one man was fanning him &
the room was full of women. The game had be-
gun [begun], so I didn't pay much attention to it, tho we
sat out where we could see, Mr. H. arriving on his
motor-bike a few min. after me. Mrs. H. had on a
new dress piped in old rose, but the baby fell over
backwards & bumped his head, so after she'd paci-
fied [pacified] him she had to go & change it. Mrs. G. came
about the time I left, so she & Mrs. E. followed later
in a gharry. We had a nice dinner & delicious
confection that Mrs. H. had tried for the 1st time.
Rained again, so we had to go home in gharries,
& Mrs. E. post phoned her first night's staying in
the new build – A man came to see about the com-
plaint [complaint] against the police man & said he ought to be trans-
ferred [transferred] – he had tried to bribe Sol. to intercede for him!
Mr. H, we found had had trouble with the same man
over similar offenses! Mrs. E. was invited to stop
with the Swif's but declined as she's written to Joseph's to

reserve her accommodations at the G. House.
The H's stay with the Hatterslys; no one has asked me
yet, but as I'll be at the deaf school it doesn't make any difference.

September 13, 1922 – Wednesday
Pouring down this a.m., so Ma M., who had part
of her children's books at her home to correct,
did not bring them; she did at noon, however,
so this finished up the back-work; in the mean-
time [meantime] I was busy with the remainder of the II S.
which I had not seen thus far; was fortunate
in being able to finish so can begin on the 4th
tomorrow. The V S. I have been having write in
their new note books almost daily, as I want a
lot of work to show the inspector when he comes,
and as they have not had these long, of course there
is not much done in them as yet. The VII S. girl who
was helping in the Inf. S. went home Mon. I believe;
her father, who had been bitten by a mad dog & had
been in R. for treatment, stopped here Sun. on his re-
turn [return] & took her with him. She was making herself
useful, so we shall miss her, tho' she left a half
doz. bros. & sisters behind her here. Have caught up
on the papers at last, I'm glad to say. The sick man
died today but is not to be buried till tomorrow. Now
I shall begin on the accumulated Geographies,
which I've been longing to do ever since the arrival
of the June no – & there are 2 more in the meantime.
No time to read "The Lays" yet – one of the next things
I've got laid out to do; there are also several borrow-
ed [borrowed] books to get off hand during vacation, if not be-
fore [before]. Had my B. exam. yes., so today told them of
their mistakes; will have to grade later.
