Mary Ruth Slaton diary, 1947

Monday, December 8, 1947 I washed today. Mother couldn't help me as her back is still giving her trouble. I went to bed a while this afternoon. I took a nap and read some while in bed. We looked for Lawrence & Jean tonight but they didn't come.

Tuesday, December 9, 1947 I got most of my ironing done this morning. I went to see Mrs. Jones this afternoon. Mother is still having trouble with her back. We heard "The Amus and Andy show" and "Fiber McGee and Molly" tonight.

Wednesday, December 10, 1947 I finished ironing and washed a few pieces this morning. Rex & I went to town this afternoon. I got part of my Christmas shopping done. I saw Jean down in town. I got a new red coat. Jean and I like it. We may be the only ones. I got a wool blanket for Uncle Brock. It cost $18.99 and is guaranteed for 5 years. I read some tonight. It is turning colder.

Thursday, December 11, 1947 I ironed a few pieces and patched some and have done the general house work. I addressed 30 Christmas cards this afternoon. I read some to Robert also. It has been cold today.

Rex helped killed hogs today. They killed 2 hogs for Mr. Jones, 2 for Loyd & one for us. Elmer & his wife came today and helped us. Dock & Loyd ate dinner with us. Elmer rendered the lard and we ground Sausages. We got through quicker than we usually do as we had so much help. I read some tonight. I have a bad cold.

Saturday, December 13, 1947 I am nearly sick with a cold. Rex, Robert & I went to town today. Robert & I got Robert's Christmas shopping done. He wanted to get all of us a present besides his teacher and some of the chidren at school. I went with Robert to Jessie's a while then I went back down in town and ate at Hugh's Place then I went to the show. I read some tonight. Mother stayed at home with Uncle Brock.

Sunday, December 14, 1947 Lawrence, Jean and Lin came this afternoon and got a Xmas tree. Jean, Robert & I went with the men after the tree. I have a bad cold. We listened to the Radio and I read some tonight.

Monday, December 15, 1947 It has rained nearly all day. I washed a few pieces for Robert. I have felt awful bad today. My bad cold doesn't get any better. We looked for Lawrence and Jean but they didn't come tonight. I guess it was too rainy for them. I read some tonight.

My cold is better. I ironed a few pieces. I addressed some Xmas cards this afternoon. The sun has been shining today. it has been cold today. I read some tonight. We heard "the Amus and Andy Show", and "Fiber McGee and Molly" over the Radio tonight.

Wednesday, December 17, 1947 351st Day - 14 Days to Follow

Rex and I wen't to town today. I got a new Black Felt hat and some slippers, gloves and scarf today. I wen't to the Show this afternoon. My bad cold is better but I still feel bad. I got a check from Magnolia Mining Co. for $183.42 for tipple Royalty and Mother got a check for the same amount.
