Cincinnati 17th July 1824

Dear General

I enclose you a part of a paper printed at Sparta Tennessee & Edited by that scoun-drel Thos. Eastland. You will see that his enmity to me still continues to manifest itself with as much venom as ever. I totally disregard this contemptable ebulition. But as a vindication of all the charges which have been brought against me is about to be published here and as Winches -ter relies so much upon Eastlands statement as to call it "a precious document" I wish to have a fair statement of his character given. In a Conversation with our friend T. Crittenden on the subject He said that Eastland was one of the greatest scoundrels in existence and that you could procure certificates to that effect, that in two trials He had manifested a total destitution of principle - one in relation to the Herodsburgh Springs & an other about a tract of land in Woodford County. Now as the enmity of this Viper has been brought upon me by my supposed partiality for you, I think independently of the claims of friendship I may with propriety ask your assistance.
