Devils Cake

1 cup light brown sugar 1/2 " sweet milk, 1/2 cup grated chocolate, when it comes to a boiling point set aside to cool. next take 1 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup sweet milk, 2 full cups flour 1/2 teaspoon soda sifted in the flour cream butter + sugar, add 3 well beaten eggs then milk add the first part when cool then the flour + soda Bake in layers (if desired)

(filling) 1 cup sour cream 1 cup English Walnuts, chopped fine, I cup granulated sugar boil together untill as as you wish, frost top with plain frosting

frosting

to white of 1 egg, add as much sugar as will make a nice consistency to spread, add 1 teaspoon cream tartar

Angels food

1 tumbler flour (8 [co?t)] 1 1/2 " " fine granulated sugar. 1 even teaspoon cream of tartar, an a pinch of salt sift all together 3 or 4 times, then beat the whites of 10 eggs to a stiff froth in a large bowl. adding gradually the sifted sugar + flour, flavor to taste. Bake in unbuttered tin about 35 minutes in steady oven covering with heavy paper + have grate under the pam when done turn over on a wire stand or anything to let the air under. Let stand untill cool

Spice Cake in layer

1/2 cup mollases 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter -, (scant) 1/2 cup buttermilk, or sour milk " teaspoon soda + 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 egg 2 cups flour

filling for cake

1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 cup milk boil like boiled frosting

Walnut Cake 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter 2 tablespoons mollases, 2 eggs, beaten well. 1/2 cup sweet milk, 2 cups flour. 2 teas poons baking powder. 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoons cloves allspice and nutmeg, 1 cup raisens chopped 1/2 cup English Walnuts - chopped, frost in white + cut in squares with walnut meat on each square

Fig Cake

1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup milk, whites of 4 eggs 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder (Vanilla) bake in 2 square layers (filling 1/2 lb figs chopped fine " " " almonds blanched + chopped 1/4 lb raisens juice + grated rind of 1 orange 1 cup sugar let cook slowly one half hour, when cool add 1/2 teaspoon Rose water Spread between layers + on top, cover with white icing Grand Rapids Cookbook

Orange filling

whites of 2 eggs 1 tablespoon of juice + sugar, cover with icing if desired

Chocolate Cake

This cake is made in 2 parts as follows) dark part boil together 1 cup grated chocolate, 1 cup brown sugar and 1 cup milk (light part)

1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup butter, 2 eggs 1/2 cup sweet milk 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon soda + 2 of cream tartar, mix the 2 parts together bake in 3 layers + fill with frosting

filling for Hickory nut-C 1 cup sour cream, boiled with 1 cup granulated sugar when boiling add 1 cup Hickory nut meats 1 teaspoon corn starch, moistened with a little water pour on a little hot water + add to cream flavor with vanilla + spread little warm
