Hon J A Sutter Hock Farm

Sir, In the absence of the Superintendent of Indian Affairs, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 9th instant, relative to the character and condition of the Hock and Yukalmey tribes of Indians, living in your vicinity, and requesting authority from this office to control and protect them.

Enclosed herewith you will please find your appointment as Special Indian Agent for the above named Indians, conferring upon you the authority to control and protect them.

As the Superintendent of Indian Affairs is not authorized to allow compensation for Agencies of this character, no special duty is imposed upon you, except what may be deemed by you necessary for the protection of the Indians and the preservation of peace.

your attention to the law penned by the Legislation of 1855 of this State prohibiting the sale or gift of intoxicating liquors to Indians, and admitting Indian testimony in prosecution for this offense.
