I have this day received from J. Y. Mc Duffie Esq. his Bond as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in California. The Bond being joint and several I consider it good for the penalty. Mr. Mc Duffie has also deposited with the assistant Treasurer of the U.S. at this point, the sum of $1089.83 for balance due the United States, as also the further sum of $2943.79 to await the result of a suit to be brought against him by the United States.
I enclose to you the Bond and the receipts.
In compliance with the instructions of your letter of April 4th, I have delivered Mr. Mc Duffie his Commission, and given him the certificate as directed.
