Fort Yuma July 12 1859

Hon James W. Denver Commissioner of Indian Affairs Washington DC

Sir I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your instructions of Dec 9 1858 which I received before my return to this post yesterday, having been absent amongst the tribes in this district who are friendly, for the purpose of preventing them joining with the Mohaves Yampai's and pi utes, in hostilities against the whites. In compliance with the request of Special Agent Bailey See copy of letter marked A to Lt Col Geo hauman, U.S.A. I forwarded the Agricultural Tools to the Pima Village by a responsible party free of cost to government, to the care of Agent Walker notifying him of the same and enclosing receipts for him to sign & forward me. The seeds four (4) bags of wheat & one (1) of Barley I distributed to the Cuchanus or Yumas they having none & being very anxious to procure some. While the Pimas & Maricopas have an abundance they having disposed to the Overland Mail Company one hundred thousand pounds of wheat Wm Buckley Esq Superintending Agent of the Company from this place to Tucson being my authority. Your instructions in reference to the ballance of the goods &c shall be carried out at the earliest practicable moment.

It is deemed of the utmost importance by the Military officer in Charge of the Expidition against Mohaves and their allies, as also by Col hauman Commanding at Fort Yuma, in which I agree with them, that until the troops now on their way

here from San Francisco shall have arrived at this point & taken up their of line march for the Country of the hostiles up the Colorado. I should remain to prevent the Cuchanos Digenos & other tribes who inhabit & who reside in the vicinity of the Colorado and who at the present time manifest a good deal of [illegible] quiet as far as possible.

I am fearful that the amount of goods is too small for a general distribution as contemplated by your instructions to me & will give rise to a good deal of dissatisfaction amongst them for taken the published statement of Special Agent Bailey to the Secretary of the Interior. The Maricopas number 4635 Souls, & the Pimas 1500 warriors & allowing five souls to each warrior, which will be admitted as a low estimate by every one conversant with indians, 7,500 making a total of 11,835 Souls amongst whom to issue about $400 worth of goods

Paper marked B is an inventory of the goods from which you can form an idea of what amount each will receive.

Very respectfully Your Obdt Servant H P Heintzelman U.S. Agent

Sir

I have the honor to enclose here within two bills of lading of goods purchased by me under instruction from the commisioner of Indian affairs for the Pinus & Maricopas. I will be greatly obliged if you will receive these goods and store them until instructions in regards to them can be sent out from Washington.

Should a favorable opportunity occur please distribute the hardware and seeds among the Pinus. I have been informed that they are exceedingly anxious to obtain a few hoes and spades etc and I know that the Indian office is desirous of maintaining unimpaired the friendly relations hereupon existing between Indians and Whites,

with great respect yr obdt sert G Bailey special agent Ind.
