or I should not have been able to get the
party comfortably through the mountains.

The necessity for hiring the horses was
this; the party consisted of J. Ross Browne,
Mr G. Bailey, Mr Jennin (an invited guest
of Mr Browne) and myself - Mr Tobin
and Mr Clement, who were employed by
me to attend the party. There were not
horses enough to be had at Nome Lackee,
the point from which we started, hence
the absolute necessity of hiring these.
