CA: E. Mix Esq. Acting Commisnr of Indian Affairs, Washington, D.C. Sir: I am glad to learn of the full recognition of Isaac M. Ward's claim by the Supt. as appears from your letter of the 18th ult. but regret the delay which seems unavoidable. Mr Ward has left the city in the hope to find employment in the Indian Country east of [Geno?] [Utah?]. He leaves his family here, and a Power of Atty with his wife in the hope that the ? advize the means necessary to support her little ones. He left here confident that the return

mail would secure his little ones against want and had sedulously guarded, as he supposed, against delay - consulting with the Assistant Treasurer as to the ? of his Power of Atty &c. left with his wife. It is under these circumstances that my regrets arise at the unexpected source of his appointment. I am satisfied that whilst you are guided by a higher source of public duty, you do not steel your heart against the affairs of humanity - and that were the facts before you, in your leisure moments if any such, they would find a ready and prompt response.
