Office Fresno Ind Agency Cala, Jany. 6th, 1861.
Sir, Fifteen days has passed, doble the time necessary for a dispatch to go to San Francisco and an answer return, since I wrote Supt’g Agt. Jas Y McDuffie, for instructions as to when, and how, I should submit the accounts of this agency, for actual, and necessary expences incurred in taking care of the Government property and looking to the interest of the Indians, during the two last quarters, ending 30th Sept and 31st Decr 1860. Without having received an answer or any information on that subject. In the mien time I have learned that said Supt’g Agt, had left on the last steamer for the Atlantic states, without having given notice of his successor. Perhaps none appointed.
The tim is short untill the administration will change, consequently all Officers, fall into the hands of new and prejudiced men. Previous to which time as an act of justice to legal and just crediting, since provision should be made for the adjusting & settlement of their claims
I may at an early day be in communication with the successor of the Supt’g agent, McDuffie, and receive instructions from him
him, otherwise I shall feel called on as an act of duty due the crediters of this agency to submit their small accounts, for the necessary supplies furnished during said quarters to the department direct, for settlement.
These accounts are small, will be in due form, and nothing misterious will be found in an examination. I have long and anxiously look for a remittance for the payment of my salary.
I have the honor to be Very respectfully Your Most Obdt M. B. Lewis Sub Ind Agt
