OFFICE INDIAN AFFAIRS, NORTHERN DISTRICT, CALIFORNIA. San Francisco, Apl 17th 1862
Hon Wm P. Dole
Sir. Enclosed please find amount necessary for the indian Service in the N. Dist. Cal. for the First Quarter of 1862
It will be observed owing to the very destitute condition of the indians on Smith River Valley, (the place proposed for a new reservation where the Humboldt Eel River & Klamath indians have been removed) the estimate for their subsistance &c is larger than it otherwise have been, and in addition to which I wish to make provisions for those who are now being "hunted up" by the troops (under orders of Brig. Genl. Wright,) in the Trinity Humboldt and Eel River mountains All of whom I have directed to be taken to the Smith River Valley, because of the cheapness of supplies &c
I have the honor to be your Obt. Sevt. Geo. M. Hanson Supt. Ind. Affs &c
