Having been
requested by Brig. Genl. Wright, to take charge
of the Indian Prisoners he had collected at
Humbolt Bay, in Humbolt Co., I proceeded on
the 5th Inst. to that point, and attended by
a company of Troops, under command of
Major Curtis, immediately removed 840 Indians
on board the Steamer Panama, landing them
at Crescent City, and thence by land 15 miles, to
Smith River Valley, Del Norte Co, the proposed
new Reservation, where I have a tolerable
supply of the staple articles of food for
Indians, on hand, which has been raised by
Indian labor the present season, and altho'
not enough to meet the demand until a
new crop comes in, will go very far towards
it, and whatever may be requisite, can
be purchased from the Farmers in said valley,
on better terms than at any other point in
the Northern Counties of Cal.
