Dear Sir, At the request of the parties interested, I have the honor to submit herewith enclosed, the [illegible] for the consideration of the Department, the claims of Jacob Lewis & Co, and Samuel A Merritt.

Dear Sir:
Please do me the favor at earliest conveniece to remit to my address Mariposa Post Office Mariposa Cal'a - the balance $37.00 due me for services rendered a an attorney in defending the case of two Indian Women, charged with having murdered a Chinese man during the Year 1858 which Indians belong to the Fresno Indian Agency and at that time & under the Superintendance of Sub Agent M. R. Lewis - as will appear by reference to number 27, quarter ending 30th Sept, 1858.
As an evidence that my claim is good, honest & just I herewith include a certificate of Indebtedness for that amount given by Sub Agent MR Lewis

This is to certify, that there is a balance of thirty seven ($37) dollars due Samuel A. Merritt, on Voucher number 27, quarter ending 30th September 1858, for services rendered, as an attorney in defending the case of two Indian women, subjecting to the Fresno Indian Agency at the time the service was rendered.
