RUSS HOUSE HARDENBERGH & DYER, PROPRIETORS

San Francisco, March 20th, 1863

Hon. W. P. Dole Com. &c

Sir: Your letter to Mr. Phelps M. C. from Cal. of Dec 16th '62 was enclosed to me by Mr. P. & received on my return from Mexico a short time since.

The draft of $400 for a portion of the services of my brother (now in Washington Ty) Thomas A. Sherwood has been rec'd through Mr. Hanson's office in this City. The balance of $150 for services during the months of July, August, & September under Mr. Dreibelbis' superintendence, is suspended.

for adjustation until further information reaches your department.

It was suspended, you say, as Mr. Hanson did not in his letter to the department recommend its payment as he had his own employee in charge during the three months in question.

I am informed by my brother, Mr. G. W. Terrill supervisor at this time & Mr. Goodspeed & Col. Buell that Mr. Hanson never suspended the employees under Mr. Dreibelbis during the three months either verbally or in writing. They remained in charge until the 12th of October, Mr. Hanson's statement to the contrary notwithstanding.

His sona grandson & a Mr. Haight came upon the reservation & remained a short time, at least the son & grandson, boarding at the expense of the old employee & then left the Reservation (Klamath) without performing any labor or giving any notice to those in charge to quit and they had no notice during the three months mentioned. They performed their usual duties upon the Reservation until October 1st. This statement you will find

verified by Messrs. Terill & Goodspeed both reputable men. They as well as my brother furnished their own board expenses during that period and were compelled from lack of pay from the Government to run in debt for the [illegible] to sustain life as well as boarding Mr. Hanson's son & grandson as stated before, fort the period that they remained during the three months upon the Reservation.

It is not necessary for me to state it, but I have no hesitation in saying that Mr. Hanson's reputation among some of his former employees on the Reservation hinder his charge, is not above [illegible] for honesty & fair dealing. I think now of reputable men that have been under his employ. Personally, I have had no business transactions with him, but his letter to you that "his men were in charge" during the months of July, August, & September on the Klamath Reservation is, I am constrained to believe, utterly without foundation. Mr. Haight above & the three who visited the Reservation remained& performed some labor (not in charge however)

whether he has been paid by Mr. Hanson I know not. He probably should be, but not the son or grandson of Mr. Hanson. Those that supervised & performed the labors incident to to their vocation should at this later period be paid. Govt. Greenbacks notes are worth in this market about 68 or 70 cents upon the dollar.

I suppose the drafts sent here have been, & will be, mostly paid here with "Greenbacks".

Very respectfully, Yours Obt Sevt W. S. Sherwood

We the undersigned have perused the foregoing letter and do fully corroborate all the facts there stated.

Your very respectfully, G. W. Terrill F. Goodspeed
