Hon. [illegible] Dole, Commissioner Indian Affairs Washington, D. C. Sir, I had the honor to acknowledge rec't [receipt] of your letter of the 21st January 1863, in answer to my letter of the 5th Dec 12, submitting estimate for funds for the 1st quarter 1863, and am pleased to learn that a [Remission?] for $9,713.50 has been issued in my favour - I had also received a Tabular Statement of the above together and, in my disbursing of the sums - Permit me today in conclusion that the amt. specified above is very limited for the purposes intended, yet small as it is, (should the Treasury Dept. [insist?] upon the payment of Legal tender at the mint in San Francisco, it will be reduced about one half [illegible] say $4,856.25 for the payment of salaries, and other expenses for the quarter ending March 31, 1863.
