Dole, Commissioner Indian Affaire, Washington, D.C.,__ Sir: -- I have to submit the fol-lowing requisition for funds to defray the expense of the Indian Ser-vice in the district under my charge for the 1st and 2nd qre. of 1864 __ [illegible]:-- For pay of Suptg' Agent, $1.500, " " " Clerk, 750. remittance of the amounts asked for. The recent and continued trou-bles among the Indians in the Valley of Owens' River; their removal to the Tejon Reserve; their consumption of all the Subsistence upon that Reserve; their now destitute conditions; the approach of winter, and the impossibility of obtaining supplies upon credit, plainly indicate the propriety of prompt action by the department in furnishing [illegible] to meet this great urgency-- Again, unless speedy relief comes in the shape of funds, it will be almost impracticable to transplant supplies to the Reserve, after the Winter [illegible] fairly set in, as the roads are then nearly, if not quite impassable. In any judgment, if the am't asked for ever trebles, it would still fall short of meeting the requirements of the service in presenting suffering among the Indians of this district, during the coming Winter.
