Yuba City Cal. Jan 4th 1864 Hon W.P. Dole Coms &c Sir, I have the honor to enclose herewith receipts of my successor for property turned over to him belonging to U.S. on the Mendocino and Round Valley or Nome Cult Indian Reservations. The receipt for property in Office also. Mr Steele has been here in my absence and received 1 Buggy 1 Harness, & Two horses for which he left me no receipt, but no doubt will send me one, He also made a mistake and took a horse belonging to my son, & and left a worse one belonging to U.S. I have not received his receipts yet for the property at Smith River; but will do so and forward it to you before long - You will observe the Hamblen and all the other cattle at Nome Cult, which Mr Steele has receipted for, are described by him as being in the "range." I know when they were branded they were all turned into the "Government pasture" - since that time they may have gotten out, and you will see

he has with that remark receipted for them all (462 head) besides 108 of the Hamblen calves "running with the cows" and the Supervisor certifies the 462 were "taken up on his property returns" - but the 108 calves were not, 77 had out of the 462 Hamblen cattle have been slaughtered & issued to the Indians up to 1st Oct last -; "The [residue?] 385 head with [illegible] [108?] calves running with the cows are subject to the determination of the department" - Now I cannot think that your office will determine, after one half the best cattle have been slaughtered and issued (for I expect if 77 [illegible] issued in one & half months, 200 or more has been issued by this time) that I must loose [lose] or pay for all the balance - The 325 head he describes in his receipt as "not driven up" are a part of those I purchased for 1862, from Carmac (tame American) and a part of those turned over to me by Col. Henley (late Agt) (which are Spanish & wild) mostly the latter I could not be present myself at Nome Cult, but authorized the supervisor to act for me, and take the receipt of my successor when he came to receive
