San Francisco Jan. 12th 1864. Wm P. Dole Esq., Commissioner Ind Affrs.: Find enclosed herewith property account bringing my affairs with the Department up to the 1st of October, also a letter of Supt. Wentworth showing his reasons for not receiving the cattle in his District still remaining in my hands. The cattle are at San Luis Obispo and are still in the hands of Major Hensley and J.C. Davis of whom they were purchased, and these gentlemen have given me notice that they will not be responsible for them any longer, on account of the prospect of a drouth [drought] and famine in that part of the Country and the great danger that they will be last by starvation, and the fact that their pastures are

not now sufficient for their now stock. The reason of this stock remaining so long an my hands, is that my suce ssors [successors] in office have never [illegible] in condition to receive it. McDuffie refused to receive because he had no horses to brand them. They have re mained to this day in my hands and it will be seen by my [illegible] that I have accounted for them by certificates of issue, as they

[illegible] been slaughtered and used on the Reservation, and at this time, there are still a number that I have not been able to diliver [deliver]. I wish also to call your attention to the horses [illegible] and oxen still remaining on my property [illegible], and which according to my instructions were turned over to Agent Gieger, who refused, as I have [illegible] [related?] to receipt for them. A part of [this?] property is on the Nome Cult Reservation, or at the Ranch of Geiger in Ishama County, and can be traced and recovered ^to the Department if proper steps are taken on that subject. I would suggest that the present Superintendent Steele be instructed to investigate this subject - recover the property on report the feud to the Department. Very Respectfully Your Obt Sevt.
