Yuba City Cal. Hon Wm P. Dole Coms. July 18th 1864 Sir, Preparatory to a settlement of my accounts, I have searched in vain for the duplicates of my successors receipt for the property on, & Indian goods sent to the Mendocino Indian Reservation. I think it is very probably that I transmitted it with the origonal [original] to your office and will be under the necessity of troubling you for a copy. In your letter of 30th Jan. last enclosing coppies [copies] of letters to J. Ross Browne & E Steele, I find they are instructed in settling the claims of employees only to allow for checks which I had issued & were unpaid to them, & which I was willing should be taken from my a/c. &c &c I have to state that I informed you in a former letter that I used the money (by their consent) of Mr. Bryson Supervisor & 3 or 6 others, employees at Smith River Res. for the purchase of 19 large American mares & colts in Oregon. I gave Mr. Bryson a check for his; but running out of blank checks, I gave none to the employees, but was to do so after my return which was neglected -

They all gave me vouchers which went on to my credit - and they have not to this date recd. either check, or money therefor [therefore] - The supervisor Mr. Bryson whom I detailed for the purchase of the mares is cognizant of the facts. I am willing that they also, as well those holding the unpaid checks, shall be paid, and their vouchers canceled or stricken from my credit. and hope you will instruct accordingly those with whom I have to settle my a/c's Had the whole of the last year appropriation been transmited [transmitted] to me, it would have nearly squared off all the the liabilities up to the time [illegible] removal and saved ^thereby a vast amt. of trouble & vexation in ^settlement of these accounts & claims - I have the honor to be your obt sevt -
