Hon Wm. P. Dole Coms. &c Sir, In answer to your letter of 21st Jan. last, showing a balance on my property account up to 1st July 1863 against me at $71.80 on charges of N.L. Beall without certificates of issue for [illegible] &c. For shafts & tongue to Buggy & Buttons I have to say I have been waiting in vain for such certificates in answer to a demand made by me in March last to Mr. Beall, but no answer or certificates have arrived - The distance for me to travel over mountains more than 100 miles, & then Beall would likely have to travel 40 or 50 miles further to see persons who could certify to the issues & which will cost more than $51.80 in coin. I have no doubt of its correctness however or I should never have paid it. The error of the Buttons was made by my clerk; But you will find an excess in Buttons thread & other things, in the receipts of Mayhew, Special Agt for Steele, among the goods returned by Hamblin, Buttons &

and thread costing Hamblen $20 in coin equal than to $35 in currency which has gone to the Indian Service, I obtained the services of Supervisor Bryson to turn over the Hamblen Goods & at the time nothing was thought about these items - Enclosed please find certificates as to the "Shafts & tongs" & also the Buggy & two horses recd by Mr. Steele which he acknowledged in a letter I sent you; but which he refused to send me a rect for. It is now over two long months since I wrote to you enquiring [inquiring] in regard to a final settlement, & no reply up to this date, perhaps the overland mail being stopped or destroyed is the cause. I have written three times to Mr. Steele on the subject of settlement & have no reply; Twice to Mr. Wiley & he answers that he has no instructions, & once to J. Ross Browne to San Francisco which was returned "Not Called for" He is some where lecturing in Navada [Nevada] Ter - I informed you in my letter of July I think that Hamblen had agreed to take me for the amount of what goods he sold & allow it taken out of what is due him for the cattle if I would pay him in three months the time is nearly out & I cannot pay

him until I can have a settlement as I think there will be enough due me for that purpose. I hope therefore the department will expedite the settlement; or I will cer tainly suffer more than I have - for if the checks I gave which are yet unpaid by Mr. Steele are not soon lifted, I fear I will have much trouble. Hon. C. Cole Member of Congress has very kindly consented to make a settlemt. with you in my behalf, Hence I will write to him authorizing him to do so, He says he will be in Washington some weeks before Congress meets & will have time to do so, & he will have other claims to collect for employees which Mr. Steele did not pay for want of funds & are left with me to send him to you for payment, Mr. Cole will be authorized to sign vouchers for Hamblen, and myself & collect the money. If you will not allow me to go to Washington, this is the best mode of settling I know of - If the Supt. here is instructed to pay I fear the money will be "all gone" first - Errors can be corrected if made, I have directed Wm. P. Melendy ^Late Supervisor to correct some he made in Round Valley returns which will be forwd as soon as recd. I have the Honor to be your obt. Sevt. G.M. Hanson Late Supty Agt &c
