Status: Needs Review

Fort Bragg Cal.
/ February 4th 1864
Dear Sir
Capt D. W. Smith has the kindness to
to recommend me to apply to you to secure
the payment of the enclosed vouchers for
Beef supplied by Saml. J. Beale & Brothers
to the U.S. for Indians on the Mendocino
Indian Reservation during the years 1861 to 1862.
The beef was supplied upon the [author.?]
of the late Supv. Indian Affairs for Northern
District Cal. ~ Gov W. Hanson. I took the vouchers
on an account upon Mr. Hansons guarantee
of the prompt payment over a year since.
I applied to his successor Mr. Steele
who told me that he had orders not to
pay any debts against the U.S. contracted
by Mr. Hanson.
I am very much in need
of the money and think they ought to be
paid, and any assistance you can
render me will be thankfully received and
your trouble and expense in this matter
cheerfully paid.
Please inquire into the matter
and write to me at this post as soon
as possible. Yours truly
H. C. Perry
Actg Asst. Surgeon Genl
Hon. Thos Shannon M.C.
Washington D.C.
P.S. If nothing can be done with these please adress the
vouchers & certificates but I duly think they will be paid immediately upon
presentation.
