Office of Indian Affairs, San Francisco, Cala, July 6th, 1864.

Sir: Mr Steele informs me that just previous to his being removed as Superintendent of the Northern District, Col Henley, Sup't under Democratic Administration, notified him that he was ready to turn over one hundred head of cattle which were in his (Henley's) possession but belonged to Government. I saw Col Henley while in Round Valley a few weeks since, but he said nothing to me on the subject. I wish the Department would correspond with Mr Steele in regard to the matter, and request him to furnish me with such facts as may be in his possession touching the case.

Very Respectfully, Your Ob't Servant, Austin Wiley Supt Indian Affairs.

Hon. Wm. P. Dole, Commissioner of Ind Affrs, Washington, D.C.
