Office of Indian Affairs. San Francisco. Cal.a Oct 7th 1864

Sir; Pursuant to instructions contained in your letter of 28th July relative to the former indebtedness of the Government on account of Indian service in California I have caused the within advertisement to be published in five papers in different portions of the state.

Although I am fully aware that there are some unpaid liabilities contracted under other Superintendents that those mentioned in the advertisment. I did not dare to open the door to the class of men who did business with and were employed by Henley. McDuffie. of for the elasticity of conscience in that crowd would enable them to prove up a debt equal to that of the Southern Confederacy. Such a move would also be fully in keeping with their political scruples, as it would embarass the locomotion of the Government by withdrawing the "sinews of war."

I require evidence of indebtedness to be sworn to in cases of doubt, and in all cases under the admin-

istration of Mr Hanson. I think I shall arrive at the correct amount. Great hardships have been brought upon some persons with whom Mr Hanson did business, in some cases resulting in reducing parties to actual want. In such cases, it would afford me pleasure to see the obligations of the Government discharged. I have been compelled to incur some expense in collecting these evidences of indebtedness and I would suggest that a small per cent be retained from the amount appropriated to pay the same, to pay for advertising and other expenses incurred in this business. The creditors would not consider this any hardship, as, in nearly all cases, we have to arrange their papers for them. I submitted my plan for gathering the liabilities to our Congressional delegation and they aprroved the same.

Claims Against Indian Department OFFICE OF INDIAN AFFAIRS,} SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., Sept. 5th 1864}

Pursuant to instructions received from the Department of Interior, dated Washington City, July 28th, 1864, relative to the "former indebtedness of the Government on account of the Indian services in California," I hereby give notice to all persons having claims against the Government for supplies furnished or services rendered the Indian Department of this State under the Superintendence of Hanson, Steele, and Wentworth, to present the same to me at my office, southeast corner of Washington and Sansome streets, San Francisco, on or before the first day of December, 1864, so that they may be forwarded to Washington for final settlement. Affidavits from responsible parties will be required to establish the correctness and justice of said accounts.
