Yurba City Dec. 20th 1864

Hon. [C. Coh?]

My [dear?] Sir

I am still without an answer from [either?] yourself or [Comr?] Dole in regard to the probability of a settlement J. [Ross?] Browne is at the [Bay?], as Dr McLean informs me by letter; yet I can have no reply from him whatever on the matter of a Settlement, although I wrote to him the 5th letter some 10 days since on that subject. Steele my successor informs me that he is "out of office and has no authority to act in a settlement, and that all the papers were sent to J R[oss?] Browne for [purposes?] of settlement." I hope you may be able to [illegible?] a settlement for me; but if not, cannot you prevail on the Commr or Sec of Int to telegraph for me that I may go in [person?]

Will there be a call [illegible?] of Congress? All goes right as you see in Cal & Nevada; Nye beat [Delong?] which is right, notwithstanding the Gov. charges me $500 for "[illegible?] with my [illegible?]." [illegible?] [state?] is on the [illegible?] in Cal. he is [illegible?] [prestige?]. Does Lincoln know C. is his secret [enemy?]

Very truly your friend G.M Hanson
