I kept for the convenience a while here to visit the Indian troubles in Butte Co.
The check held by Hamblin & others I wish to lift, and cannot do so until they are paid off. Mr Steele holds the money appropriated for that purpose & refuses to pay it as instructed. Hamblin was to be paid down & others took those checks in lein of cash & expected them to be honored with the money he now holds & passed me their vouchers which went to my cr. you can see from the a/c current last sent & the a/c of disbursement this fact, and that I am no "defaulter" as charged by Mr. Steele. Mr Steele has been notified that the Indian goods have been returned & are ready to be turned over to him but no reply as yet. I hope you will renew instructions to him to pay before I am sued or threatened on those checks. I want nothing to stand to my cr. there which is not right & properly belongs to others.

Fresno County California January 8th 1864,
Hon. Wm. P. Dole Comr. Ind. Affs,
Dear Sir Your letter of the 25th, November last 1862 has been received. In answer to which, I have the honor to State, that I truly regret being under the necessity of informing the Commisioner of Indian affairs and also the Second Auditor of the Treasury Department, that this document to which you call my attention as being a statement of difference as furnished me by the 2nd, Auditor of the Treasury Department under date of November 7th, 1862,- has not been received by me, neither has such a document ever been seen or heard of in the Post Office of Millerton,- If possibly many hear [illegible] of San Francisco, and is now [illegible] the papers ofSuperintending agent Wentworth, over looked, owing to the accumulation of papers in his office when absent in the Southern portion of his District.
The mess carry & consequent non-receptive of that Document, is a matter that I have much to regret, none are account of the interest of other persons than in my own account,
The last Document, that I received from the 2d Auditor pertaining to the settlement of the accounts of Fresno Indian
3
Indian Agency, was over the, "8th April 1862", with a Letter accompanying, under date 14th, June 1862, showing a difference in the adjustment of my accounts for "3rd & 4th qrs 1858,_ The years 1859 & 60, and part of the 1st qr 1861,"__ of $ "3262.41/100" - found due the U.S., _ differing from my account, $30,784.48/100"-- &c &c, __ All Exepting taken there to, and explanations required was promptly made out and forwarded to the Department at Washington under date of the 30th, August 1862
Learning from your last letter under date of 25th, November 1863, __ That [illegible] yet held as [illegible] the settlement of my accounts in the sum of - $1372.26/100, __ and that and abstract of the balance due the crediters was required by the Department, I have with, care and assistence, proceded to makeout a full and complete abstract of the total amount expended for supplies furnished and services rendered, Fresno Indians Agency from the 1st day of July 1858 to the 15th of March 1861, inclusive showing the total amount originally due each crediter, _ The total amount paid each creditor owe the balance due each Auditer respectively. All of which when fooled up, as I do beleive correctly, is found to differ materially, from the differences found by the 2d Auditer on his examinations of the accounts under consideration.
It will be seen [illegible], that the larger portion of
4
of the differences found, is accumulated for by the discovery of two errors and one omission, _ in the make ing up of the statement, showing the amount of indebting and credits given them, for supplies furnished & service rendered, during the Fiscal year commencing the 1st day of July 1858 and ending 30th June 1859 submitted to the Department with accompanying explanations under Act of [illegible] Congress 1860.
Viz H. Hazletine & Co, was credited with $49.14/100, the whole amount due him having sum paid $78.24
Thos. Vinsonhaler was credited with $167.50 Which should have been the amount paid him $315.00
Thos. Vinsonhaler omitted which was paid $500.00 as will affirm by the inclosed [enclosed] & accompanying instruments from Thos. J. Henley left under date of December 10th, 1858, - also see same Document explanating to the Hazletine claim, and as if draft taken from my check book [illegible] to the $315.00 for which I [illegible] Thomas Vinsonhaler a check in the US dft Treasury San Francisco.
Following the, recapitulation, of the whole amount [illegible], Receive & paid out, Please see, a recapitulation of the different amounts [illegible] by me, from the resepective Superintendents from the 1st days of July 1858 to the 15th, March 1861 inclusion, Which_ when fooled up shows a difference of $143.96/100 in my favour,

Hon: John Conness,
Dear Sir,
I take the liberty to enclose to you, triplicate vouchers, for a claim I hold against the Indian dept, for services rendered to the Indian at Colville, during my sojourn in that vicinity
I also enclose the letter of Mr C. S. Miller, in whose name I left the vouchers for collection which explains itself

Hoping that all goes well for our glorious union and that you will excuse me for troubling you with this business, I remain Respectfully, &c Isaac Parry [June?] 2d [illegible] [63 ?]
