United States. Records prior to the official

those post dating the capitulation of Confederate
General Robert Edward Lee (2807-70)

War. The bulk of this collection of official and
semi-official organisational files is for the
period 1861-65. It consists of 9 general series:
1) records of the Department of State, 1859-72;
2) James Wolcott Wadsworth (1846-1926) collection of
diplomatic correspondence and letters of Raphael
Semmes (1809-77); 3) records of the Executive and

War Department, 1861-65, containing correspondence,
letterbooks of correspondence between Hamilton

records of the Navy Department, 1861-64, consisting
mostly of accounts, receipts, a few logs, reports,
and some correspondence. There is also a large
miscellaneous series, not directly related to
