IOWA SEED COMPANY, DES MOINES, IOWA. 99.

[image] FIREFLY GARDEN PLOW.

TOOLS AND IMPLEMENTS. To reduce the cost of gardening it is necessary to have the best tools. A good wheel hoe is as much superior to a common hoe for cultivating a garden as a mowing machine to the sickle in the hay field. All of the following tools have been thoroughly tested, and, for their own particular class of work, have given splendid satisfaction. The soil on which they are intended to be used, as well as the use to which you intend to put them, must be well considered. If you desire it, we will send illustrated and descriptive catalogue or circular of any of these tools. Prices are low this year. FIREFLY WHEEL GARDEN PLOW.--It makes the care of a vegetable garden a pleasure, and 10,000 families who could not find time to keep a garden if attempting its cultivation with an ordinary hand hoe can raise their own vegetables successfully with the Firefly. Will both plow the garden and attend to the cultivating and weeding throughout the gardening season. The moldboard is tempered and polished steel. Price only $2.00. PLANET JR. NO. 3 SEED DRILL.--We regard this drill as the acme of perfection, and most decidedly the best seed sower made. It will sow perfectly either in a continuous row or drop the seed in hills, either four, six, eight, twelve or twenty-four inches apart. It opens the furrow, drops in hills or drills, covers, rolls down and marks the next row, all at one operation. The hopper holds three quarts. The wheel is thirteen inches high. It is changed in a moment from hill dropping to drill work. It has a force feed, sows equally well whether the hopper is full or contains only a paper of seed. It is nicely adapted to all conditions of land, working especially well in fresh ground or when planting on a ridge. The plow is adjustable, and opens a very narrow furrow, which is a great advantage for after cultivation. This machine is now offered for the first time, but it has been thoroughly tested by about fifty practical gardeners in various parts of the country, and they all unite in sounding its praises. The manufacturers guarantee it to give satisfaction. Price $9.00. PLANET JR. COMBINED DRILL, WHEEL HOE, CULTIVATOR AND PLOW.--This is the most popular tool we have ever sold. As a plow it opens furrows, covers them, hills, plows to and from, etc. As a hoe, it works safely to and from both sides of the row at once, or between rows, working all rows from eight to sixteen inches wide at one passage. As a cultivator, it is admirably adapted to deep mellowing of the soil. It sows all garden seed accnrately [accurately] at the desired depth, opening, covering, rolling down and marking the next row all at one passage in the most reliable and perfect manner. Each machine is sent out with the tools shown in the cut. You will be surprised at the great amount of work it will save you. Even if you have only one acre of ground in garden crops, it will more than pay for itself. Price $9.00.

[image] PLANET JR. NO. 3 SEED DRILL.

PLANET JR. DOUBLE WHEEL HOE.--This popular hoe merits the thorough admiration of every practical gardener. Each tool is sent out with the attachment shown in cut. The arch is high enough to enable the operater to work both sides of the row at once until plants are eighteen inches high; then the wheels can be set to run close together and work between the rows. Leaf guards (detachable) go with each machine, to be used when plants extend into a wide row. This tool is light, very simple, very strong, made of the best material and highly finished, and nothing exceeds the variety and perfection of work it performs. It will do the work of six men with ordinary hand hoes. Price $6.00. THE PLANET JR. PLAIN DOUBLE WHEEL HOE.--Like the machine just described, except that it has no attachments except one pair of hoes. It is just the thing for onion growers and others who want a hoe only, and at a small cost. Price, $3.50. PLANET JR. HILL DROPPING DRILL (Double Wheel).--Much like No. 3 seed drill, but it has two wheels, and is for that reason preferred by some gardeners. It holds two quarts and sows all kinds of garden seed with the greatest regularity, either in drills or hills. Price $10.00.

PLANET JR. No. 2 SEED DRILL.--Similar to but larger than Planet Jr. Combined drill holding 2 1/2 quarts. Price $6.50. PLANET JR. SINGLE WHEEL HOE.--This single wheel hoe is considerably lighter than the double, and does almost the same variety of work; the attachments are nearly identical. Owing to its lightness, it is more pleasant to some than the double wheel hoe. Though intended chiefly to work between the rows, it can be used to hoe both sides at once, while plants are small, by placing the wheel to one side of frame. Price $4.50. FIREFLY SINGLE WHEEL HOE, CULTIVATOR AND PLOW COMBINED.--This convenient tool combines lightness and strength with great adjustability, while its highly polished and tempered tools make gardening comparatively a pleasure. The tools are all made after the most perfect models, and are, first, a pair of hoes, which can be set to work to and from the row, and to any desired depth; next, a set of three reversible cultivator teeth, to be used together or singly, or in conjunction with the hoes; third, a large, excellent garden plow. The whole tool is light and strong, attractive in appearance and capable of standing hard usage for years, while the price is its final recommendation. Price $3.75. PLANET JR. PLAIN SINGLE WHEEL HOE.--Has only one pair of hoes, but the other attachments may be added later if desired. It is cheap and will be a popular tool. Price $2.75.

100. SEED CATALOGUE AND GARDEN GUIDE.

[image] PEERLESS GARDEN CULTIVATOR.

PEERLESS GARDEN CULTIVATOR.--This new tool which we now offer for the first time has many features which will recommend it to the practical gardener. When we tested it this summer we were really surprised at the ease with which it worked, cultivating and thoroughly pulverizing hard, unplowed ground. The handles are shaped so that they rest easily on the hands, and the wheel is so high (23 inches) and broad-tired that it is no more work to cultivate with it than to trundle an empty wheelbarrow. The shape of the blades is such that all grass and weeds are cut, and the soil left mellow and level. It is also a combination from which five distinct tools can be made. Blades are warranted to scour in any soil. Price $5.00.

Take the Wilmer Atkinson Farm Journal 50 Cts. a Year it will be sent one year to any one ordering seeds or plants from this catalogue to the amount of $1.00 or over. Be sure and say you want it.

LARGE CUSTOMERS. Our orders range from five cents upward and the small orders have just as careful attention as the large ones. Our largest retail order was for $1,370.77 worth of seed. We had another customer whose purchases amounted to $1,487.73 for the season, but it was divided up into several orders. Both were perfectly satisfied. We have large customers in the east also. W. P. Turner, of Penna., bought seeds of us to the amount of $1,397.54, and he says: "I am very well pleased with all seed received from you and it has given perfect satisfaction."

[image] PLANET JR. TWELVE-TOOTH HARROW AND PULVERIZER.

PLANET JR. TWELVE-TOOTH HARROW, CULTIVATOR AND PULVERIZER.--For fine cultivation, either deep or shallow, this has no equal. The recurved throat and high frame prevents clogging, and the reverse position is given to the teeth in a short time by changing a single bolt in each. It is provided with a new lever wheel, used to regulate the depth with exactness; also with a pulverizer, which leaves the ground in the finest possible condition. The pulverizer is controlled by a lever that can be operated in an instant by the foot while in motion. The pulverizer may be reduced in width by taking off the outside teeth, and the tool may be used to straddle a row, cultivating both sides at once. As a harrow, the work done is most perfect, and with the teeth turned backward it is admirable for trashy ground and leveling, and for crops just breaking through the surface. Weight, packed, 60 lbs. Price, $7.50, or without pulverizer, $6.25.

McGEE GARDEN CULTIVATOR OR SPRING HOE.--The invention of a practical onion raiser, who knew just what was wanted and how to make it. It has two wheels connected by an arch attached to frames by a lateral spring, enabling the user to almost "fingerweed" the crop, as the machine is under such complete control. Onion growers claim this is the best cultivator for onions. With each tool there is a pair of knives, that operate as hoes, and a pair of cultivators. These attach to the beam by means of an eye bolt, and are adjusted forward and backward on the beam to any angle with the plants or to any angle with the surface of the ground. The adjustment to and from the row is accomplished instantly by means of the springs, which at the same time keep the knives or cultivators under control and protect the plants. For years there has been no tool placed on the market so admirably adapted for the purpose intended. Price $4.40. MATTHEWS' DRILL.--This is the old original Matthews, and is of especial value in sowing beet, parsnip and other difficult seeds. When in operation, it opens the furrow, drops the seed accurately at the desired depth, covers it and lightly rolls the earth down over it, and at the same time marks the next row, all of which is done with mechanical precision, by simply propelling the drill forward. The agitator stirs the seed in the hopper thoroughly by a positive motion, which insures continuous and uniform delivery, and the bottom of the hopper is made sufficiently dishing to sow the smallest quantity of seed. When desired the movement of the agitator can be checked, and the drill may then be propelled forward or backward without dropping seed. There is also an ingenious device just added by which the seed can be cut off while turning at the ends of rows, thus saving quite a percentage of seed. A simple contrivance accurately gauges a uniform deposit of the seed to any required depth, thus avoiding the risk of planting at irregular depths, or so deep in places as to destroy the seed. Price, $8.00.

[image] AS A CULTIVATOR AS A HOE MCGEE GARDEN CULTIVATOR.

[image] MATTHEWS' SEED DRILL.

PLANET JR. COMBINED HORSE HOE AND CULTIVATOR.--This well known and popular tool is acknowledged to be the best in the market. The patent lever expander, changes the width instantly; the handle adjustment regulates the heighth, and also sidewise for use in grapes, pole beans, blackberries, nursery stock, etc., and when covering. It also has parallel frame, interchangeable and adjustable hollow steel standards, reversible blades, sleeved bolt holes, etc. As a horse hoe, with the side teeth reversed, it cuts close to the row without injury to the roots, leaving but little and in many cases nothing for the hand hoe. As a cultivator, the reversible teeth cut off and turn over the weeds in the most perfect style. As a hiller, the side teeth work in combination with the rear shovel to perfection; price $7.25. Extra attachments: Furrowing steel, $1.75; marking attachment, $1.60; covering roller, $1.25; 8-inch sweeps, 30c each; 10-inch, 35c; 12-inch, 40c; 15-inch, 45c.
