6 SEED CATALOGUE AND GARDEN GUIDE BEETS (One ounce sows 50 feet of drill; 4 to 6 lbs. for one acre.) For early, sow as soon as ground can be worked, and from the middle of May for general crop, in drills 15 inches apart and 1 1/2 iches deep. As the plants grow, thin to 6 inches in drills. Young plants make excellent greens. The soil should be a deep, rich loam. Hoe often taking care not to bruide the roots. CROSBY'S IMPROVED EGYPTIAN.- We believe this to be the earliest variety. Great improvement on the old Egyptian, being thicker, handsomer and more regular in shape, smooth with small tops and small tap root. Thakes on its turnip shape and looks well even in early stages of growth, therefore it is perferred for forcing to any other variety. This is a decided advatage for a market where beets are sold in bunches. Very popular with Des Moines market gardeners for this purpose. Being a rapid grower, it may be sown outside as late as the first of August. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 45, lb. $1.50. EARLY CRIMSON GLORE.- A very early variety, of spherical form. Skin very smooth and it is as handsome a beet as you can imagine. It is a rich, deep red color, shading to purple. Its flavor cannot be surpassed. When cooked it is of even, dark color throughout, and is attractive on the table. Of uniform shape and size. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 45, lb. $1.50. DETROIT DARK RED.- One of the best varieties grown for main crop. Its roots are round, very smooth, of good marketable size, and for table use no variety can excel it in fine quality. The skin is deep blood red; flesh is also dark red and is sweet and tender. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 45c, lb. $1.50. ECLIPSE.- this variety is still exceedingly popular. It possesses all qualities requisite in a first-class beet, and is of uniform globular shape Roots a bright, glossy red, fine grained and delicious. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10, 1/4 lb. 35c, lb. $1.00. DEWING'S IMPROVED BLOOD TURNIP.- Improvement on the old Early Blood Turnip. Globe-shape, deep blood red color, fine flavor, a good seller and generally considered the most desirable variety for main crop and winter use. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 85c. IMPROVED MARKET GARDENERS.- Undoubtedly One of the best varieties ever introduced, and receives much praise from our customers each year. As will be noted by engraving, it is very symmetrical, with small tap root. Unusually small tops. Though on some soils the Egyption can be marketed a few days before the Market Gardeners, still within a week it will be found larger than the Egyptian, while it continues to grow until late in the fall, attaining a large size, and making a good eating and selling beet for the winter. One sowing only is necessary to produce early beets for the market and main crop for winter use, which is not the case with any other variety. Its color is deep blood red; fine grained and unsurpassed in quality. Summing up, we find it the best beet for early market, the best for winter use. The most profitable for the market gardener and family gardens. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 45, lb. $1.50. GOLDEN GLOBE.- A distinct variety fully equal and by many considered superior to the red sorts in sweetness and flavor, but both the skin and flesh are of bright yellow color. when cut up in a dish with red beets, they make a handsome contrast. They mature early and are so sweet and nice that they should become popular. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c. LONG DARK BLOOD.- A well known variety. Smooth tender and a good winter keeper. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 75c. MIXED TABLE BEETS.- A mixture of the above varieties which will mature in succession so that one planting will give a supply all summer. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 85c. GIANT LUCULLUS CHARD.- Chard beets are growing in popularity. This variety is the largest and handsomest. Leaves are beautifully curved, and of a soft, clean shade of green. The thick, broad stalks are as large as rhubarb. They are prepared and served in the same manner as asparagus, or leaves and stalks can be used for "greens," and are considered by many superior to spinach for this purpose. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 45c, lb. $1.50. SWISS CHARD. or Silver Beet.- This is the old standard variety with dark green leaves. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 35, lb. $1.25.
