Text of Petition: 16-1-1803-1 To the Honorable, the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee We your petitioners, a number of the Citizens of Wilson County, humbly sheweth, that whereas the last Session of the Honorable House, look measures to ascertain the boundary of said County, and also appointed Commissioners for the purpose of procuring a suitable place for the seat of justice, errecting publick buildings &c. Your Petitioners humbly conceive it was very improper for said Comissioners ot have acted, aftter themselves, as well as the Couty at large being fully convinced said County was not Constitutional as to its limits. Nevertheless, they proceeded to establish said County Town, very contrary in our humble opinion, to public justice, and greatly to the injury of the Community, even as the County now stands, and must of necessity be more so to any who may be added hereafter.- We therefore pray you Honorable Body, to take measures to redress our grievances, and that the [Courthouse?] may be brought to a more beneficial point, as a worse situation, perhaps will not be conveniently found, both as to the prospect of health and other accommodations. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound shall ever Pray. 3d July 1803

Date Filed (format: YYYY/MM/DD): 1803/01/20

Petitioner(s): The inhabitants in the West end of Montgomery County

Purpose / Short Description: Create new county

Text of Petition: 20-1-1803-1 The honorable the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee. Session 1803 The petition of the inhabitants in the West end of Montgomery County humbly sheweth that from the Court house in the Town of Clarksville to the Western extreme of the County is from fifty to sixty miles, therefore it is very incon -venient & oppressive to your petitioners to attend Courts. &c- and that the situ -ation of the aforesaid Court house is cen -tral for a Constitu^tio^nal County- - Your petitioners earnestly solicits your honorable body to take their peculiar hard case into consideration and grant their relief, by circumscribing Montgomery to the constitutional limits, and erecting the Western part thereof into a new and distinct County and your petitioners as in duty bound will ever feel the highest impressions of gratitude -

Text of Petition: 7-1-1803-1 To the Honorable the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee; The Memorial of the Board of Commissioners for the Government of the Town of Nashville, represents.- The present situation of the Jail of Da= vidson County is such, that it is impossible without great labor & difficulty to keep it in proper order, and by the number of breaches made thro' the said Jail, has rendered it very unfit for the safekeeping of Prisoners. The noxious effluvia arising from the filth whiche is thrown from the said Jail in the warm and sickly season very much endangers the health and lives of the Inhabitants living adjacent thereto, and particularly by those who are settled on the fractional lots which were sold for the purpose of building the said Jail. Your memorialists further represent, that the repairs which the present Jail just necessarily undergo in a very short time, and the subscriptions which might be had for building a new one or removing the present, would be nearly equal to the ex= pences necessary. They also represent, that a situation which superior to the present might be had very convenient to water. They there= fore wish your Honble body to take the pre= =mises under your consideration, and appoint Commissioners for the purpose of fixing on some more eligible spot than the present, which would be the least injurious to the Citizens of the Town, and contract for the building
