Know all men by these presents that I, Jesse Smith Snr [Senior] of the County of Henrico, for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which I bear to my son Jesse Smith jr [Junior] of said county as well as for the further consideration of one dollar in hand paid by the said Jesse Smith jr, at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have given and granted, and by these presents do give and grant unto my son Jesse Smith jr his excutors [executors] admr [administrators] and assigns {two negroes VIZ. Abraham and Cesar being the said negroes hired the present [added above: year] for the benefit of my daughter Ann P. Burgess, to have and to hold the said negroes unto him the said Jesse Smith jr his excutors admr and assigns forever. And the said Jesse Smith Snr for himself his excutors and admr, the said negroes doth warrant unto the said Jesse Smith jr, his excutors admr and assigns, against the claim of him the said Jess Smith Snr his excutors and admr and against the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whatsoever, shall and will warrant and forever defend them by these presents. In witness whereof, I have hereunto put my hand and seal, this twentysixth day of April one thousand eight hundred and seventeen. At a quarterly court held for the county of Henrico at the court house on the 4th day of August 1817 This deed of gift was proved by the oaths of Thomas Lewis and Patrick H Genry, witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded Teste J.B. Whitlocke C.H.C. [Clerk of Henrico Court] [The six lines above were written across the top short edge of the page.] Smith to } Deed Smith } Gift 1817 Augt [August] 4th proved by 2 wits [witnesses] done.
