Notice Notice is hereby given that Agnes Smith a free woman of color will apply to the Hustings Court of the City of Richmond on behalf of herself and her only child Charles Smith on Monday the 7th day of September 1857 for leave to remain in the state of Virginia June 15th 1857 Agnes Smith by her counsel

City of Richmond to wit This day Chancy G. Griswald personally appeared before me Herbert A Claiborne a notary public in & for the said city and made oath that he posted a true copy of the foregoing notice upon the court house door of the Hustings court for the city of Richmond on the 17th day of June 1857, and that the same remained posted there on the second Monday in July and the second Monday in August 1857. Given under my hand this 11th day of August 1857. H. A. Claiborne N.P.

Know all men by these presents that I William G. Mann of the County of Essex in the State of Virginia, have manumitted, emancipated and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free, a servant woman named Agnes Smith aged about thirty seven years, with a scar on her right arm just above the wrist, and her male child Charles Smith who was about two years old in March last, together with the future increase of said Agnes Smith, and I do hereby declare her the said Agnes and her child Charles, and the future increase of said Agnes to be entirely liberated from slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of free persons, with which it is in my power to vest them. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 24th day of November 1849. Teste, W. G. Mann {Seal} Wm Watts C. G. Griswold A.B Gaigon

City of Richmond, to wit: At a Court of Hustings held for the said City at the Courthouse, the 10th day of February 1851, This deed was proved as to Wm G. Mann, by the oath of A. B. Gaigon, a subscribing witness thereto; and at the same Court, continued, and held as aforesaid, the said deed was fully proved as to said Wm G. Mann by the oath of Wm. Watts, another subscribing witness thereto, and ordered to be recorded. Teste, Chs: Howard clk
