15th May 1897 Dear Julia Stoddard sends you to day the photo of the critic, which is very fine, excepting mine - In recent years I have developed a [jeu ?]. Stoddard also tells me to say to you with my love that he has always remembered and appreciated your faith in him and your stedfast friendship. I am not very merry now for Torey left us for California yesterday with a San Francisco manager who has accepted a play of his which has to rehearse there.

Torys present success is phenominal. He is to write a play for Salvi - another for Mrs Fiske and just as he left a letter came from Olga Nethersole accepting a play - which has been refused more than once - so you see success makes success - not a very nice hope for human perceptions. Your truly EDBS
