by tormenting there is no free gift about it.

Claire, ask my borther George to write to me, he is the only one who has not. I am owing Grace and Alfred letters but shall have the pleasure of writing them later on today. Remind George how much I think of him and tell him to go over and borrow any of my books that he likes, I know they are safe in his keeping.

Now good morning, Love, and God bless all you dear ones. Give my love to the dear mother.

Your own faithful Grace

Afternoon

March 6th 96

My Dearest Love.

Yours of Tuesday night received with the enclosed English letter. What a lovely friend! I thank you so much for sending his letter to me How would you like it for Sunshine to come home just a month from now, right after Easter. I wonder if you would rather I did not. I am taking a lesson every day now to double up time

as I feel almost certain Daddy wants to be off early in April.

I was extravagant and bought a bunch of violets down the street this morning. They have made me so happy, smelling of the delicious wet spring woods, as they do: They seem to hold the essence of the damp rich turf in [theirs?].

What a shame it is that my letters

just decided to come home at Easter and written you so, before reading your statement of Papa's desires.

All works together for good and I am so happy at the thought of coming home to you all. It seems too good to be true.

Pierre has sat in my room every night since Sunday, and read "John" I do believe from little words and thoughts dropped, that I am getting [hold?] of him. My blessed one, good night

Sunday Night March 8th 1896

My Dear Chris,

Went to St. Bartholomew's Church this morning, did not particularly enjoy it, and this afternoon went to the Randall's and then jumped in upon Mae Van just about 6 o'clock. I could only stay a few minutes, so we talked a blue streak and then she walked a few blocks with me to where I took the car. We always enjoy each other so much, - even for a few minutes. Tonight I am all alone. Have been reading lately - "The Gates Ajar" by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps - It is a most beautiful and touching little book - We had an awfully long chapter to read last night but a most helpful and beautiful passage. We shall soon be through the psalms. The 22nd of march finishes there. Suppose we take the Gospel of John, one chapter a night, after the psalms give out. Let me know if this place pleases

74 Rue du Cardinal Lemoine Paris

Dear Family:-

I imagine that one nosee is badly out of joint now that Marcelline is so brilliantly taking the centre of the stage. We are both highly interested and not a bit jealous because we know what a good time it all is and that we cannot be expected to be looked upon as a bride-and-groom forever! It all sounds too lovely for anything from Marce's letter to Ernest. I sure do wish I could be there for the grand festivities and so does he. Well, you must think of us a little and we shall think of you, you can be sure, especially Marcelline!

Well, our news, which E. is too busy to write you today, is that he's just come back from Constantinople, - came in at the Gare de Lyon at 6:35 this morning. Oh my goodness I didn't know anyone could be so glad to get anyone back! Its so wonderful being married but you're only half of twice as big a personality. Tell Marce I say that and [?] [?] as the

2 all of us as a possession. It was just like you to saw them, choose and mark them for us with such painstaking mother. Ernest is terribly proud of them. We have showed them to J.H's godparents Miss Stein and Miss Toclaz and they are wild over the whole family. You can imagine how I love Ernest's baby pictures!

Well, we are all in fine health and just about settled. I think we shall stay here by our sawmill in spite of certain uninviting features belowstairs. We get [s?eter?] up on our floor every day. There's so much sun and light and Bumbie sleeps all day in his bed right in the big French window all dressed for outdoors, comes in to meals with pink cheeks and uproarious laughter. He is taking Nestle's six times a day, me six times, and orange juice before his 12 o'clock meal. He adores them all and calls for more. Weighs over 15 lbs. Yesterday was his 6 month birthday as you showed you remembered in your letter mother, and we had Gertrude Stein and Alise Toclaz over. The baby received rubber animals from them and a beautiful silver cup out of which he drank
