11. A C.O.'s responsibilities, according to King's Regulations, are a bit heavy and pretty complete, you know. Although the 2nd in command may keep these accounts, it is I who am responsible if anything is wrong, and if, through slack accounting, which is easy enought in the officers Mess and Sgts Mess money is not there - it is I who has to pay. So it makes one sit up a bit. One wretched major, commanding a unit near here, had is accounts in such a muddle, that it took this man who came to see me today, four whole days to sort them out - and it is now going to be followed up by a Court of Inquiry. Quite apart from accounts - every ruddy thing in the Coy is on my charge and is my responsibility. The cair and table I am writing at now - all the men's clothes - all the rifles etc - a ammunition - all the latrine buckets - and all the cooking apparatus. So its quite a business - and as we used to say in the 5 Cheshires - one has to keep one's feet dry. There is an allowance in the Army, called Command Pay. Unfortunately, this Unit does not seem to quite fit into any of the qualifying categories, which sems to me to be wrong - as I have all the work, worries and responsibilities. So I am goingto put in for it, and see what happens. If it can be arranged, it would be another 6/- a day, which would be loely, because then I should not have to toch pay at all.
