ments to take an unfair view of the sit-
uation. Papa thought I might to stay, []
& Mrs Wright thought I had failed to meet
the situation. I seemed to myself to have
succeeded since they wished me to return.
I felt even a different success in having
worked in spite of the opposing forces.

I decided not to go away for the few
free days, since I was not to go home. There
was nothing to be done. I tried to work
Sat. morning but could think of nothing
but what was ahead of me. At lunch
I sat with Miss S. She hopelessly misun-
derstood whatever I said. I [illegible] of the
trajidy of the doorkeeper in the bank who
lets business in & out, not of [illegible] himself
his pay unfluctuatingly small. She
thot I meant that he envied the rich.
